What Type Of Training/Education Do Optometrists Receive

Becoming a qualified optometrist requires extensive training and education. At the Los Angeles Vision Center, all of our optometrists are fully qualified with the training and education required for optometry board certification in CA.

Program Requirements

To practice as an optometrist in the United States, optometrists must fulfill several requirements. The first step is completing an accredited four-year Doctor of Optometry degree program. Most programs require at least three years of undergraduate study before admission; however, some accelerated programs are available for students who have completed their prerequisites. After graduation, optometrists must also pass the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) exam before practicing professionally.

During their studies, optometry students learn about ocular anatomy and physiology, optics and refraction, pharmacology, vision therapy and rehabilitation, contact lenses, clinical management of eye diseases, pediatrics, and binocular vision disorders. Additionally, they will gain hands-on experience through supervised clinical rotations in primary eye care clinics with experienced ophthalmologists or optometrists.

Continuing Education Requirements

Once they have graduated from an accredited program and passed the required California licensure examinations, licensed optometrists must complete continuing education units (CEUs) throughout their careers to maintain their licenses. Completing courses or seminars related to optometric topics, such as new treatments for eye diseases or advances in technology, keeps our optometrists up-to-date and ready to serve patients with the best care available. When new treatments become available to help our patients, our team attends the training needed to bring the treatment to residents of Los Angeles, CA.
