Sunglasses with Los Angeles Vision Center

It feels good to go out in the sunlight but, as with everything else, too much sunlight can be bad for you. The sun gives off rays in all bands of visible light, and the lowest end, the ultraviolet end, can damage your eyesight. At Los Angeles Vision Center, we recommend that all of our patients wear sunglasses every time they go outside. The damage from UVA and UVB rays can build up over time, and can even cause diseases that endanger your eyesight. Wearing the right kind of sunglasses can prevent that damage while making it more comfortable when you're spending time outdoors.

UV rays are always around during the daytime, even on the cloudiest day. That's why it's important to wear sunglasses every time you go outside. The damage from UV rays is both short-term and long-term. In the short term, UV rays can cause headaches, squinting, watery or itchy eyes and even corneal sunburn resulting in temporary blindness. UV ray damage is cumulative, which means it builds up over time. After exposure for a number of years, the damage from UV rays can include cataracts, macular degeneration, or skin cancer around the eyes.

Why Prescription Sunglasses?

If you wear prescription eyeglasses to correct your vision, you may not want to be bothered with an extra pair of glasses just for wearing outside. But prescription sunglasses give your eyes two types of protection in one: safety from UV rays plus safety from dangers related to poor vision. When you come to our office, you can choose any frame we offer and have it turned into a pair of prescription sunglasses.

The most effective sunglasses block at least 99 percent of all UV rays in the environment. This helps to eliminate the dangers from UVA and UVB rays. It's also important to get sunglasses that protect your eyes from visible light, so ask for a pair that blocks 90 percent of the visible light spectrum.
