Eye Exams

Taking care of your eyes is important. You only get one pair, after all. Routine eye exams are a great way to keep track of your eye health and catch any problems early. But what should you expect during a routine eye exam when you visit an optometrist? At Los Angeles Vision Center, we are here to educate you on the most common types of routine eye tests that can benefit your eye health.

1. Visual Acuity Test

The visual acuity test is the most well-known test during a routine eye exam. This test measures how clearly you can see at various distances. The eye doctor will ask you to read a Snellen chart, which has different-sized letters that get smaller as you move down the chart. This eye evaluation test can help detect vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

2. Refraction Assessment

The refraction assessment is another test that is often performed during a routine eye exam. It involves using a phoropter, which is a device that contains a variety of lenses. The eyecare specialist will ask you to look through the phoropter at an eye chart. We will then flip different lenses in and out until we find a combination that gives you the clearest vision. When we have found the right lenses, we will then prescribe glasses or contact lenses.

3. Slit-lamp Examination

A slit-lamp examination is an important eye test that involves using a special microscope called a slit lamp. This machine shines a thin beam of light into your eyes. The light illuminates the different structures of your eyes, which allows the eye doctor to get a good look at them. This eye evaluation can help catch eye problems early such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
