Glaucoma can develop gradually and often causes little to no noticeable vision change in its early stages. By the time symptoms become obvious, permanent optic nerve damage may already have occurred. At Los Angeles Vision Center, we provide glaucoma evaluations and advanced diagnostic testing for patients in Los Angeles, including those near Wilshire Boulevard, so we can identify concerning changes as early as possible.
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain. Elevated eye pressure is an important risk factor, but glaucoma can also occur when eye pressure falls within a range that appears normal.
Because early glaucoma may not cause pain or obvious symptoms, routine comprehensive eye exams are especially important. Patients with a family history of glaucoma, increasing age, certain medical conditions, or previously elevated eye pressure may require more frequent monitoring.
A glaucoma screening involves more than simply measuring eye pressure. We evaluate several aspects of eye health to determine whether glaucoma is present or whether a patient may be at increased risk.
Depending on your individual needs, testing may include:
Tonometry to measure the pressure inside the eyes
Optical coherence tomography, or OCT, to produce detailed images of the optic nerve and retinal nerve fiber layers
Visual field testing to identify areas of peripheral vision loss that may not be noticeable during everyday activities
Retinal and optic nerve evaluation to look for structural changes associated with glaucoma
Additional imaging or follow-up testing when we need to compare changes over time
Our Los Angeles office offers diagnostic technology including OCT, visual field testing, tonometry, Optos imaging, and other medical eye exam services used to evaluate and monitor eye disease.
OCT is particularly valuable because glaucoma can cause microscopic changes to the optic nerve before patients recognize vision loss. The test uses light waves to create detailed cross-sectional images of structures at the back of the eye.
We can compare these measurements at future visits to determine whether the retinal nerve fiber layer or optic nerve is changing. Tracking these changes over time helps us determine whether closer observation, additional testing, or treatment may be appropriate.
Peripheral vision loss is one of the classic effects of glaucoma. Visual field testing measures how well you can see objects in different areas of your vision while looking straight ahead.
The results create a map of your visual field, allowing us to identify patterns of vision loss that may be associated with glaucoma. Repeat testing can also help us determine whether the condition is stable or progressing.
Glaucoma screening is not a single test. Combining eye pressure measurements, optic nerve imaging, visual field testing, and a comprehensive medical eye examination gives us a more complete picture of your eye health.
